Abstract
Jee-Bor Huang, one of the renowned Taiwanese authors of fairytales in early years, has spared no effort for the task since the publication of his first book --- a collection of fairytales, back in the year 1961. To this date Huang has not only authored 42 volumes, including fairytales, children’s stories, children’s poems, scripts and writing manuals for children but also chief editored for over 90 books.
This study mainly focuses on Jee-Bor Huang’s works of fairytale. I have paid Huang many visits to understand his background and his motives of writing fairytales. In this study I have discussed what this pioneer of Taiwanese children’s literature has achieved in fairytales. In terms of theme and motif, plot and structure as well as character development of fairytales, I analyzed the topics and genres, writing skills and depiction of characters within his related works. From Huang’s frequent revision of his own works, I have realized what an author should observe.
Through the abovementioned analysis and induction, I have firstly described characteristics and values of Jee-Bor Huang’s fairytales, and secondly discussed what contributions he made have placed him in the history of Taiwanese fairytales.
