Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北大學 === 經濟學系 === 93 === As the female labor participation rate is increasing by year in the Taiwan labor market, it’s visible that wage gap between male and female workers exists in the Taiwan. This study uses Taiwan’s Manpower Utilization Surveys of 1978, 1992 and 2003. According to Oxaca(1973), the wage differential can be decomposed into the effects of unobserved differences and personal characteristics differences. Our research results indicate that the effects of differences calculated from the personal characteristics could explain gender wage gap from 64.93% of 1978 to 84.88% of 2003. Conversely, the effects of unobserved differences could explain gender wage gap from 35.07% of 1978 to 15.12% of 2003. We further explore this pattern with a trend decomposition that provides a richer description of changes in Taiwan’s wage differential. The research results indicate that female workers gained relative to their male counterparts in measured qualifications, particularly education and experience. We also find that education could decrease gender discrimination.
