碩士 === 國立臺北大學 === 社會學系 === 93 === There were few unemployed studies internally in the past. Most sociologists attach importance to the research of the involuntary unemployed. This paper analyzes the behaviors of personal voluntary unemployed, which are classified according to the research of Abelson(1986). In the background of the structural unemployment and high unemployment rates since 1996 in Taiwan, the purposes of this study are to explore: which persons are not satisfied with their jobs and voluntary unemployed? Are they better educated than involuntary unemployed? The purpose of this research is to explore whether the reemployment probability of the voluntary unemployed is higher than the involuntary unemployed or not. This paper is based on the raw data from 1998-2002 Manpower Utilization Surveys (MUS). MUS conducted by Directorate General of Budget Accounting at Statistics (DGBAS) is a rotating yearly survey. The same sample is combined to form as the short-term investigation data, and analyzed in event history analysis. The event history analysis of the reemployment probability considers that the level of education, unemployed reasons, personal characteristics and the structure of labor market are all factors of the reemployment probability. Which personal characteristics may be voluntary unemployed? According to the cross analysis, the findings indicate that: females, younger, single and better educated, most of their unemployed reasons are voluntary. Further, the study is based on the logistic regression, given the structure of labor market and the personal characteristics are equal, the variable of level of education is conspicuous. We can say that credentialism has a great effect upon the labor market in Taiwan. So better educated turn into the significant factor of self-identification and become the important reason of quitters. Whether the unemployed period of the quitter is shorter than the layoff or not? Using the event history analysis on Cox model, the research results indicate that the unemployed reason didn’t have significant impact on the reemployment probability while other variables are equal. Therefore, this indicates that quitters would not have shorter period of unemployment than their layoffs counterparts. The reemployment probabilities of quitters and layoffs are not quite different. The study results are similar to scholars'' previous research.
