This study is aimed to discuss the mediating effect of autonomy, relatedness and competence in coaches’ leadership style and athletes’ participation motivation. The participants of this study were senior high school athletes including handball, korfball, soccer, volleyball, baseball and basketball teams. There are 299 male and 113 female participated in this study and the average age is 16.3(SD=0.93). The data is processed by exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings are as below: 1. Moral leadership could be the positive predicator of athletes’ autonomy and relatedness. Benevolence leadership could be the positive predicator of athletes’ autonomy while authoritarianism leadership could be the negative predicator of athletes’ relatedness. 2. Autonomy and competence could be the positive predicator of athletes’ intrinsic motivation, identified regulation while they both could be the negative predicator of athletes’ amotivation. Relatedness could be the positive predicator of intrinsic motivation while it could be the negative predicator of amotivation. 3. Moral leadership could be the positive predicator of intrinsic motivation and external regulation while it could be the negative predicator of amotivation. Benevolence leadership could be the positive predicator of identified regulation and introjected regulation. Authoritarianism leadership could be the positive predicator of intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation and amotivation. 4. Autonomy, relatedness and competence had partially mediating effect on the relationship between paternalistic leadership and intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, amotivation and self-determination index. The final section of this study was to discuss the findings based on the research framework, and to propose suggestions to practical application and future research. Key words: paternalistic leadership, self-determination theory, hierarchical model of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation Huang Ying-Che 黃英哲 2005 學位論文 ; thesis 84 zh-TW
