The study subject of this article is the “mono-melody” in Han traditional music. The main object is “Grieving for Yen-Hue”. This study used the main body of this song to study and analyze its music style and drama type and to observe the music culture.
First, this thesis described how the song “Grieving for Yen-Hue” was distributed, what kind of instrument was used, and how the band was organized. According to the preliminary research of this study, the “Grieving for Yen-Hue” can be found in 25 types of drama and in more than 10 kinds of music. It is sprightly. The song was presented as song music and instrumental composition. “Grieving for Yen-Hue” is mainly performed using drums and panpipes. However, there is one example that is preformed using string instruments.
The main body of this thesis is the analysis of the situation and music type of “Grieving for Yen-Hue”. According to the song title, “Grieving for Yen-Hue” is a kind of sad and sorrow music. Most of the time “Grieving for Yen-Hue” is played in funeral. Although it is not mourning Yen-Hue the very person, it still has that sad sorrowful scenario. Most types of “Grieving for Yen-Hue” in Quen Opera are using for describe battles of wars; only few types are used to express sentimental feelings. In other types of drama “Grieving for Yen-Hue” is used to describe the fighting in wars as well. In some music types “Grieving Yen-Hue” is used to mourn Yen-Hue, and the usage conforms to the song title.
