Summary
The purpose of this research designed to explore the kindergarteners’ concept of solid figures. The comprehend task investigated the understanding the description about the solid figures. And, the classification task was a figural matching procedure where global contour or detail features was a basis for judging similarity. Fifty 5-year-olds in Taipei were examined by individual test. Results showed that kids did a good work with two tasks. During the comprehension task of selecting one in 5 or 6 solid figures, kids can refer to the objects, which adults oral dictated. No matter what the terms of space or direction were provided, kindergarteners can get it right over 85%. Kindergarteners can understand the description of solid features. In classification task, one target and two references were provided for comparison, kindergarteners are asked to classify target with one reference or the other. The Taipei kids could answer correctly over 90% in concept subtest. And, the kids from remote area got over 70% correct. In preference subtest, there were no evidence to support that kids in Taipei prefer to classify solids by their contour. Apparently, kindergarteners from remote area tend to classify by contour. But too few of them were tested, so it still needs further study to prove and support this find.
