Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣海洋大學 === 食品科學系 === 93 === Abstract Osteoarthritis usually happens in over 40 years old and the peak appears when they are over 60 years old. Among those patiens, female are more than male. Osteoarthritis affects the quality of patients’ life a lot, so that the priority medical treatment is to relief knee pain. Recently, glucosamine is often used as a nutritional supplement to modify osteoarthritis’s symptoms all around the world. However, some osteoarthritis patients also come down with osteoporosis in clinic at the same time. Therefore, it becomes the most important to declare whether glucosamine sulfate also affects the effect of improving bone mineral retention or osteoarthritis patients need to take addionally calcium to improve bone mineral retention. In this study, the patients were divided into four groups, which were the groups of glucosamine, calcium and glucosamine+calcium. The patients were instructed to take two capsules of glucosamine, one capsule of calcium phosphate, or both in the morning and at night daily. After 6 months experiment, all patients were examined the blood biochemical characteristics including cholesterol, triglyceride, RBC ,WBC, liver and kidney functional indicators and calcium. The bone mineral density and knee pain scale were also determined. It was showed that there were no bad effect on male and female patients who took glucosamine, glucosamine sulfate + calcium or calcium. In spite of male or female patients, taking glucosamine+ calcium showed the best effect on improving bone density and modifying pain. While taking glucosamine or calcium supplement alone also showed the effect of improving bone density and modifying pain. Hence, the glucosamine+ calcium supplement treatment is a good nutritional therapy for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis patients. In addition, taking glucosamine is effective on improving the symptoms of osteoporosis.
