This study is to prepare and characterize glass ceramics by thermal plasma treatment of non-combustible fishery wastes. This study is directed towards the optimization of waste stream for plasma vitrification treatment, in order to establish a better understanding of the feasibility of the plasma system in treating fishery wastes. Fiber-glass reinforced plastic (FRP), oyster shell and waste glass to form vitrification slags by thermal plasma and the resultant slags are characterized for their physical and chemical properties. Optimization of waste stream such as ratio and type of wastes is determined in order to achieve better slag properties. The hardness values of slag are above HV500. Hight construction materials made from the slags under special heat treatment bear good properties of materials. These properties include density of about 0.89 g/cm3, porosity of 21%, water adsorption of 24%, bending strength of 6MPa and compressive strength of 14MPa.
The wollastonite phase was formed with a suitable additive and with the proper heat treatment. The wollastonite products obtained from this study exhibit better properties (such as hardness, bending strength, compressive strength and chemical resistance) than those of the commercial products.
Keywords: non-combustible fishery wastes, vitrification slag, artificial bone material, wollastonite.
