However, in recent years, due to vicious cycle of boom and bust, rapid growth of domestic wages, inaccessibility to land for building plants, and stricter standards of environmental laws, it’s getting harder and harder to establish business; major petrochemical companies worldwide are eager to invest in China, so the market of petrochemical industry is more and more competitive. Owing to limited economic growth and few opportunities on the market, petrochemical industry in Taiwan can start off by establishing core competition advantages based on management to face challenges of transformation of global transformation and international markets. In view of these, this article takes petrochemical industry as the research subject and plans to construct the structure of “promoting competitiveness of petrochemical industry in Taiwan”; however since there is a broad aspect of promotion of competitiveness and the core of enterprise management is plant management of production, this article investigates only from management of petrochemical plant’s point of view. This research first investigates general development of petrochemical industry in Taiwan to get a better understanding of problems and advantages and disadvantages of this industry, and then discusses management literature that benefits promotion of competitiveness. Above all and based on enterprise diagnostic thinking, a diagnostic form and questionnaire of Taiwan’s petrochemical industry are designed for further interview with plants. Also current problems are analyzed and conclusions are reached; based on these, advices are made in hope of benefiting promotion of competitiveness of petrochemical industry. Although some companies have temporary revenues by relocating to China or neighboring countries lest they will lose international competitiveness considering costs, making an effort to improve enterprise’s condition and establish core competition advantage will be the solution in the long term. Moreover, with government’s policies of promoting upgrading of industries, building freeport zone, maintaining a global perspective while putting Taiwan’s interest first, enterprises should make good use of any approaches that benefit promoting competitiveness, provide employment opportunities and stabilize the society to be practical in the long run.
