Description
Summary:碩士 === 臺中師範學院 === 語文教育學系碩士班 === 93 === Abstract The purposes of this study were to investigate the English learning attitudes of both 3rd- and 6th-grade elementary school students in Taichung City, and to determine the relationships among elementary school students’ English learning attitudes toward English course, individual learning situation, English homework, English teacher, English teaching methods and learning motivation. Specifically, the study attempted to determine the differences in children’s English learning attitudes attributable to sex and grade level. A questionnaire was developed for the study addressing the English learning attitudes of elementary school students in Taichung City. The sample consisted of 993 3rd- and 6th-grade students from 17 elementary schools in Taichung City. The data were analyzed by descriptives (mean and standard deviation), Pearson product-moment correlation and t-test. The major findings were as follows: 1. On the whole, the English learning attitudes of elementary school students are average. Among the six aspects, learning motivation is the most positive English learning attitude of elementary school students, while the attitude toward English homework is the least. 2. The English learning attitudes toward English course, individual learning situation, English teacher, English teaching methods, learning motivation and the overall English learning attitude are related positively with each other. 3. The 3rd-grade girls got a significantly higher score on the attitudes toward English course, individual learning situation, English teacher, English teaching methods, learning motivation and overall English learning attitude than the 3rd-grade boys. 4. The 6th-grade boys got a significantly higher score on the attitude toward English homework than the 6rd-grade girls. 5. The 6th-grade girls got a significantly higher score on the attitudes toward English course, English teacher, English teaching methods, learning motivation and overall English learning attitude than the 6th-grade boys. 6. The 3rd-grade students take more positive attitude toward English course, English teacher, English teaching methods, English homework and overall English learning attitude than the 6th-grade students. Finally, based on the findings, some suggestions for the educational authorities, school teachers, and further studies are recommended in the study.
