Stopping is normally suppressed as the child progresses toward adult speech. The process has been well documented in English. However, few studies have focused on the stopping process in Mandarin- speaking children. This study investigates the stopping process in two- to six- year-old preschool children. Eighty-one Mandarin speaking children from the Taipei area were recruited. These children were divided into four chronological age groups: (a) 2;0-3;0, (b) 3;1-4;0, (c)4;1-5;0, (d)5;1-6;0. A Chinese Phonological Analysis Test was administered to all subjects to study the stopping process in normal language developing children. The frequency of stopping-error over age-range was examined to determine if stopping is a likely phonological process in Mandarin-speaking children. The stopping process as related to individual sound and sound classes was also analyzed. Results indicated that stopping decreased by age group, and that the process was suppressed at about age 4. In addition, based on the place and manner of articulation, the frequency of stopping was different for each individual sound and sound classes. Potential clinical application as well as evaluation and intervention implications were discussed. Torng Pao Chuan 童寶娟 2005 學位論文 ; thesis 0 zh-TW
