The Parenting Strategies of the gifted pupils, Type A Behavior and Life Adjustment
- taking five gifted pupils as examples
Abstract
This research’s main goal is to explore the Parenting Strategies of the five gifted pupils at the Ren-He elementary school in Pingtung County, Type A Behavior, and Life Adjustment. Then the researcher takes a further step to investigate relationships between these three.
This research employs questionnaires and interviews to collect data. First, the researcher uses three self-made questionnaires: “The Parenting Strategies Inventory,” Type A Behavior Inventory,” and “Life Adjustment Inventory” as research instruments to get individual-option-filling-in-numbers statistics and percentage analysis. Second, using interview material proceeds content analysis.
This research’s findings are as follows.
1. In the Parenting Strategies
a. Five gifted pupils’ parents are quite involved in their children’s homework teaching. Due to work reasons fathers’ involvement is less than mothers’. Mothers are the real ones who guide the children.
b. In emotional counseling, mothers’ involvement is higher than fathers’. Even if parents’ counseling methods differ, in general parents take varied ways to counsel every different individual child.
c. Parents have great involvement in ordinary life education and set as examples to their kids. They demand their kids’ living habits to follow the schedule, educate their kids about life principles at random opportunities, and properly control their kids’ requirement.
d. Five gifted pupils’ leisure entertainment is relatively positive. Parents care about their kids’ entertainment but due to work reasons they have less time to accompany them in proportion.
e. In general,Five gifted pupils’ parents all worry about the problem of adjustment。
2. In Type A Behavior
a. Four out of five gifted pupils show “Time Urgent,” except one doesn’t.
b. Five gifted pupils are dedicated to “competitiveness and achievement.” They have the spirit of hating losing, also like to dig out ultimate answers for everything, and hope to gain a victory in a competition Therefore, the five gifted pupils all have the characteristic of “competitiveness and achievement.”
c. As for “aggressiveness and hostility, only one gifted pupil has the tendency, but in general the other four are not obvious.
3. In Life Adjustment
a. Personal adjustment of the five gifted pupils is varied. Except one gifted pupil has headache and is embarrassed by playful questions raised by his classmates. The other four are quite good at personal adjustment.
b. Five gifted pupils are good at family adjustment although sometimes they have trivial frictions between their parents and siblings. Generally they have good family adjustment.
c. Five gifted pupils are good at school adjustment. They have good interactions with their teachers although they won’t take the initiative in chatting with them. When taking tests, they will have some trifling syndromes, but can adjust to them. Therefore, they are overall good at school adjustment.
d. In general five gifted pupils will cooperate with their classmates and are often selected as leaders. Only one is very bad at peers’ adjustment and out of envy his classmates often make fun of him. The other four are good at peers’ interactions.
4. Relationships between these three﹙Parenting Strategies、A Behavior、Life Adjustment﹚
Generally speaking, the Strategies of the five gifted pupils’ parents are more consistency with Life Adjustment.but A Behavior and Parenting Strategies are not with one accord.
In final, based on the research results, we provide suggestions for the school personnel, educators, the parents of the gifted pupils and future researchers.
