The personal meaning of dropping out for these students was also examined through their own reflection. Data were collected through the methods of in-depth interviews and focus groups of four dropouts. Documents of the students and information from their class teacher were also collected to enrich and verify the data. All the data from different resources were then subjected to content analysis and categories were developed and described. The emerging categories were also subjected to peer reviews to ensure reliability and validity of findings. The results were as follows: 1) Family system is one of the contributing factors of the students’ dropping out. 2) A dysfunctional family will impact children’s personality and behaviors. 3) The students’ irregular lifestyle will influence their school performance. 4) Absenteeism at school is an indicator of future dropping out possibility. 5) Dropouts usually have a poor relationship with their classmates and teachers. 6) In mesosystem, weak communication among the students, their families and their school also contributes to the factors of dropping out. 7) Exosystem has an impact on the students’ behavior. For example, internet stores are the respites for those dropouts. 8) Exosystem is able to provide an external control for those dropouts. Finally, some practical suggestions were provided to professional helpers. Chia-Nan Tai 戴嘉南 2005 學位論文 ; thesis 222 zh-TW
