Although it is said that TV news is not popular among children, according to former researchers and this study, it is found that children would watch news by chance. Nowadays, the quality of news is getting worse, for example, tabloid reporting and unsuitable tableau, and this is the reason why this study proceeds. When and how do children watch TV news, what are children’s comprehension and thoughts after watching news, and what are possible factors would affect children’s understanding when watching news would be discussed in this study. My participants are two boys of 5th and 6th grade, and ethnography would be adopted as research approach. Information was collected by interview and participant observation. and the point of view of my study are cultivation theory , social construction of reality and the other theories. My conclusions of the thesis are as follows: I. The conditions when the two boys watch TV news 1.Parents would set rules to choose programs for their children, but these rules are flexible. These rules are different between school day and vocation time. 2.The feelings and viewing attitude of TV news are different between these two kids. Family are the key while the two boys are watching TV news . 3.When these two boys watch TV news, their levels of attention are different, and both of them would do other activities at the same time. 4.The two boys discuss what they see in TV news with their family. However, their mothers usually play guiding or predominant roles when they talk about news. II. Comprehension and feelings of these two kids after they watch TV news 1.When the hot news are related to them or similar to their personal experiences, they will pay more attention to the news. In addition, they also care the news about children whose ages are similar to theirs. 2.Since ”The election of president in 2004”, they have started to notice about political news. 3.Watching negative TV news make two boys be afraid to be victims and come of the sense of “mean world”. They also show “sense of justice” and contend that people who injure others should be punished 4.It is found that the effect of cultivation is not overall and negative news are not so “negative”. 5.Two kids have developed their own criteria to choose the news and to judge the authenticity of TV news. 6.There are three types of comprehension when audience make sense of the content of programs, which are dominated, negotiated, and oppositional. These two young boys show them at the same time. III. The probably correlation between two boys’ viewing behavior and comprehension 1.Personal factors, media, and environment would effect children’s comprehension of TV news. 2.Other information channel, such as internet, newspaper, and their classmates, may effect kids’ comprehension of TV news.
