Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 美術系碩士班 === 93 === Understanding and communication are very important fields of knowledge in modern philosophy. This thesis takes the psychological notion of empathy and uses it as a tool to survey the problem of understanding. Empathy is defined as the ability to understand another person and this thesis aims to explore all that lies beneath the meaning of this word. In the field of counseling, empathy is one indispensable element regardless of which counseling skill is being used. However, the idea or definition of empathy is hotly debated. This thesis focuses on Carl R. Rogers who is a pioneer in the study of empathy. It try to transfer the empathy from the domain of psychology into the domain of aesthetics. Hence, this thesis analyzes Rogers’ ideas on empathy but from the vantage point of aesthetics and thus hopes to create a bridge between understanding and appreciation. This thesis begins with an exploration of the history and development of the word “empathy”. It analyzes empathy’s predecessor, which is a theory of aesthetic. Trying to get something about understanding from the “empathy” in aesthetic. Following this, separate discussions are offered on the analytical understanding of empathy and appreciation of empathy. The goal here is to see empathy as a journey from appreciation to understanding. To discuss the understanding part of empathy, one must contrast Rogers’ ideas of empathy with Hermeneutic phenomenological psychology because both use phenomenology as their foundation. However, Rogers’ empathy and hermeneutic phenomenological psychology differ slightly in their psychological approach to understand other people. Regarding the appreciation component of empathy, one must see it from the point of view of psychological distance and using these to investigate the appreciative component of empathy and Roger’s facilitative relationship. This thesis culminates in the amalgamation of two ideas, namely, understanding and appreciation. The goal of this thesis is to amalgamate concepts such as understanding and appreciation, and to see that empathy is an understanding that encompasses appreciation.
