The difficulty is enlarged by lack of sufficient data due to shorter products’ life cycle. Even under Vendor-Managed-Inventory (VMI) environment, it’s still hard to keep stockout frequency low under dramatic demand change. The research investigates performance impacts applying different retailer-based transshipment rules under VMI supply chain structure. Demand pattern and transshipment strategy are considered as experimental factors. Experiments are conducted and compared with respect to performance measures of inventory level, customer service level (stockout frequency), and total supply chain cost. It is found that customer service levels will be significantly improved by applying transshipment strategies no matter what kind of demand pattern is. No significant differences exist among different transshipment strategies. However, it is still suggested that the decision concerning choice of transshipment strategies should be made by taking all three performance measures mentioned into consideration to realize maximum supply chain effectiveness and efficiency.
