Compare and contrast the elementary science textbooks used in Japan, Taiwan and Mainland China
The main purpose of the study is to analyze and compare the related concept of animals of natural science textbooks used in Japan, Taiwan and mainland China in hope that this might offer some directions for editors and science teachers.
The textbooks are selected from the third to the sixth grades. As for Taiwan, it is the edition of Nani, People Education Publication (PEP) for mainland China and Tkb for Japan. The approach to conduct this research is based on content-analysis which focus on ‘animals’ classification’, ‘animals’ growth and reproduction’, ‘animals’ survival’, and ‘the relationship between animals and environment’.
According to the research results, the main findings are as follows:
1. Compare and contrast the units of the three different editions.
(1) The concept of animals is mentioned more in PEP , the less in Tkb and the least in Nani..
(2) There are more pages talking about the concept of animals in Nani, then the less in Tkb and the least in PEP.
(3) Animals which are commonly seen in our daily life are highly emphasized in the three editions and how they can be applied to our daily life as well.
(4) The process of experiment and observation has been clearly described in Tbk.
2. Compare and contrast the main concepts of animals in the three areas.
(1) The concept of ‘animals’ classification’
(i) This concept is mentioned with great frequency in Nani.
(ii) The strategy of teaching is more systematic comparing with the other two editions.
(2) the concept of ‘animals’ reproduction and growth’
(i) This concept is mentioned on many pages in Nani.
(ii) The edition of Tkb, however, talks more deeply about the way of reproduction.
(3) The concept of ‘animals’ survival’
(i) It’s frequently mentioned in Tkb.
(ii) the concept of community is, nevertheless, the focus of the edition of Nani.
(4) the concept of ‘the relationship between animals and environment’
(i) There are many pages talking about this concept in Nani.
(ii) None of these three edition discuss the concept of definition of animals, but all of these three insert the concept of environmental protection in the texts.
(iii) The fourth graders in Japan have to observe animals’ life which will be changed due to the alteration of the four seasons and temperature.
Generally speaking, our environment determines the survival of animals. Therefore, all the three editions put a lot of emphasis on this concept which will make people consider how to avoid overusing natural sources and to keep ecology in balance.
