~Using Musical Composition from Debussy, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg as Examples~
Abstract
The objective of this research by way of the Action Research Method is to investigate the application of modern music on the instruction of the fifth grade music appreciation course in elementary schools. The aims of this study are to to inspect a model with “Modern Music”as the main theme for the instructional activities of music appreciation course at the fifth grade, as well as to observe the responses from the students, and to evaluate the feasibility of this practice. From their qualitative and quantitative observations, the researcher has collected and analyzed data, and employed personal teaching experience to investigate the responses, behavior changes and outcomes from the students, as well as the difficulties encountered by the educators during the course of instruction and their method of solution. The results are as followed:
I. Music appreciation course with modern music as the theme and its instruction:
(i) The principle of this course design is based on appreciation instruction of sentiment and recognition, utilizing informational media as course auxiliary, in hope to provide diversity in teaching and to fully achieve the teaching objective.
(ii) The contents of this course design is based on the evolution of music history, the background of music stories and visual analogy. Each unit is then to be applied according to students’ level of recognition, and their learning experience.
(iii) From the students’ learning evaluation, it was discovered that this course design can strengthen their extent of listening ability. In addition, from the students’ learning outcome, it was observed that modern music can arouse their learning interest and stimulate their ability for thinking and making judgment.
II. Instructional model of music appreciation with modern music as the theme:
Model A- Appreciation instruction based on non-musical factor; Model B- Appreciation instruction based on music as the intrinsic factor; Model C- Appreciation instruction combined with general instruction. These three types of teaching models were applied interchangebaly, and integrated into games. This way, the students gain interest of learning from their participation in the analysis and discussion after listening to the music. Once they are motivated to learn, any materials related to music appreciation can be easily integrated into the course. .
III. The feasibility of applying modern music to the music appreciation instruction in elementary schools
During the course of research on modern music, the process of preparing self-compiled teaching materials has also benefited the researcher to the ability of designing instructional activities and to inspire the growth of professional knowledge. From the modern music course design, students have developed interest for modern music, initiative for learning, “perception” and “cognition”. Their learning experience of modern music can be extended into extracurricular activities, showing the importance of promoting the value of modern music instruction.
In respect of “modern music”, not only does its materials or the style of its content possesses rich sophistication, it also represents much instructional value and significance; therefore, this research has further proposed the prospect into the future:
I. On the application of music instruction
According to the style of modern music evolution and in regards to the design of the instructional materials for modern music appreciation, each piece should represent or clearly show its musical concepts and appropriateness. As for the instructional activities, their quality, entertainment level, and diversity should be the primary focus. However, since modern music does share in common with visual arts, it is suggested to be combined these, such as through the use of multimedia or artistic presentations.
II. Suggestions for future research
Investigation of related research topics in other categories of modern music or post-contemporary music should be continued. In addition, the experiment objects should be altered or expanded. The number of the research staffs can also be increased, since it would compliment this study through coordination with other educators in the field.
