This study intends to explore the current use of Arts and Humanities textbooks by Taichung City elementary school teachers and to conduct a survey on teachers’ opinion about their use of Arts and Humanities textbooks in order to understand whether or not Arts and Humanities textbooks can meet the teaching purposes and needs of teachers from different backgrounds. In view of the purpose of this study, the author has compiled a “Questionnaire on Current Condition and Opinions on How Arts and Humanities Textbooks Are Used by Taichung City Elementary School Teachers” and followed by in-depth interviews after conducting a quality & quantity statistics and scaling in order to increase the correctness of the study. Finally, conclusion will be deducted based on the study result and suggestions are presented to various fields for their future references. The main conclusions drawn from this study are as follows: 1.Current conditions of Arts and Humanities textbooks used by Taichung City elementary school teachers: (1) Among the time periods that teachers use their Arts and Humanities textbooks, “Instructional use before class” rated as the highest item among all; as far as the adoption percentage of textbook is concerned, the “79-60%” rated the highest; “Aesthetic appreciation” rated as the highest level among all items of instructional activities; all the adaptability of various contents of Arts and Humanities textbooks are positive, among them, “Literary and graphic contents of aesthetic nature” rates as the highest adaptability; the adaptability of “Demonstration of art expression activities” rates as the lowest item. (2) The item “Often” top the first among all items of frequency of use of Arts and Humanities textbooks; “Preparation purpose before class” rates as the highest among all time periods that teachers use their Arts and Humanities textbooks; “For purpose of reference data” rates as the highest among all content adoption items; all the adaptability of various contents of Arts and Humanities textbooks are positive, among them, “For purpose of teaching reference data” rates as the highest adaptability; the adaptability of “Evaluation method” rates as the lowest item. (3) Among all items of efficiency to teachers, “Helpful to pre-class preparation” rates as the highest satisfaction level; among all items of efficiency to students, “Enhancing students’ capability of aesthetic appreciation” rates as the highest satisfaction level; 2. Opinions on the use of Art and Humanities textbooks by Taichung City elementary school teachers: (1) Among all items concerning textbook topology quality, “Quality printing” rated as the most satisfaction level with “Easily induce to unit situation” rated as the lowest. (2) “Adoption from life experience” rated as the highest satisfaction level among all items concerning textbook content, while “Well-constructed organization of content” rated as the lowest. (3) The highest satisfaction level found in the questionnaire is the item “Provide a clear and specific unit target, teaching method, and activities planning”; while the lowest item is “Instruction planning can be arranged and functions as a substitute for supplementary teaching”. (4) In the respect of teachers’ opinion about textbooks publishers, “Providing CD, VCD versions of instruction methods” rates the highest satisfaction level; while “Organizing presentations and study activities” rates as the lowest. 3. Conclusions on the need of Arts and Humanities textbooks of teachers: (1) In the respect of overall need, “Editing of textbooks should be based on individual subject” is the main need of the majority of teachers. (2) In the respect of need of textbook topology, related concrete need has not been presented by the majority of teachers. (3)In the respect of textbook contents, “Content diversification as well as substantiality and feasibility” and “Separation of instruction of the subjects of music and arts performance” are two of the main needs of most teachers. (4) In the respect of the need of music, the most demanded item from most of the teachers is “Music appreciation should take into consideration of students’ age differences and interests by playing a wide variety of music pieces, such as music with a special flavor or world-known music pieces. (5) In the respect of the needs of visual arts, the most demanded item is “The part of art appreciation should be increased and deepened, and appropriate introduction of artist’s life story and art history should be added”. (6) In the respect of need of performance arts, the main need presented by most teachers is that textbooks should be edited in accordance with students’ age differences and actual life experiences, and should be compliable to the current teaching conditions. (7) In the respect of the need of teachers’ manual, the main need that most teachers demand is “To increase reference data and supplementary teaching materials”. (8) In the respect of the need of teaching materials, “To increase teaching convenience by providing more teaching instruments and teaching materials” tops as the first demand of most teachers.
