The study purposes are to find out prevalence of airborne Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the hospital, prevalence of infection and disease among nurses and laboratory workers, and relative factors affecting symptoms of tuberculosis. It’s a cross-sectional study held at a medical center at north Taiwan. We grouped the study population into two groups. High exposure group includes pulmonary medical division, isolation ward, oncology division, intensive care unit, respiratory care unit, emergency nurses and clinical pathology division laboratory workers. Low exposure group includes orthopedics, urological, psychiatry department, gastroenterology division and obstetric department nurses. Questionnaires are administrated. The area air samples were taken from pulmonary medical room in outpatient department, emergency room, pulmonary medical ward, isolated ward, intensive care unit, clinical pathology laboratory, oncology ward and obstetric ward. The personal air samples are taken from isolated room while the nurses who take the sampling pumps working. We also collected the nasal lavage of these nurses when they are on and off duty. Collected samples are analyzed with Cobas Amplicor system and home-made PCR. There are no positive samples among the 49 collected area samples. We collected 98 personal nasal lavage samples, there is zero positive sample. We found the study cases who have ever worked in isolated room gave higher risks self-conscience weight-losing and tired (OR re respectly 3.4 and 2.2). High exposure group have a higher risk having more self-conscience symptoms.
