碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 族群關係與文化研究所 === 93 === This research focuses on the urban indigenous peoples. It examines what kind of phenomenon and character of their racial identity and changes. The informants have different racial identity, professional identity and different educational degree. The informants accepted deep conversation for two or three hours. The children of urban indigenous peoples were born, educated and found a job in the cities. Although they live in the cities but they almost become Han Chinese. How are they found themselves as indigenous peoples and how they become urban indigenous peoples are the main questions of this thesis. According to Primordialism, racial identity are from their feeling at home village. Regarding to Instrumentalism, racial identity are related with the political and social or economic life. It emphasizes people change when societies change. To general people, a person’s identity was sure when he was born. However, urban indigenous peoples have many characters, they are influenced by social structure and national policy. Today’s society emphasizes the multiculturalism. Multiculturalism gives urban indigenous peoples uncertainty. However, they decide their identity according to their experiences. The next generation of UIP（urban indigenous peoples） were not familiar with traditional societies. Unlike who lives in a traditional society who has community life to make strong their lives UIP’s identity is changing. They try to make a new and a community identity.
