Deer antler (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum)is a kind of valuable Chinese medicine. Its effectiveness was recorded in Chinese ancient writings; in addition, modern researchers also proved its effective chemical components. Although the source of the deer antlers was different; a quality identification system was not yet built completely. The purpose of this plan is to analyze amounts of selected effective components in Russian deer antlers as indicators to identify the quality of different parts of deer antlers.
To prepare the advisable experimental solutions, we used three different methods to extract deer antlers prototypes. The extracted samples were analyzed first utilizing UV-VIS to scan with wavelength (λ) range from 200nm to 300nm. Detecting the maximum and minimum wavelength (λmax and λmin) is an indication of good quality as reported in references. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of amino acids in deer antlers was conducted by a HPLC technique and five standard amino acids. As for the amount of the trace elements included iron, copper and zinc, a microwave digestion and ICP-AES and ICP-MS techniques were employed.
Deer antler was classified into three different parts called antler-tip, antler-stem and antler-site. There are also differences in the amount of effective components. Antler-tip’s quality exceeded other parts in the amount of free amino acids; antler-stem’s quality in free amino acids is better than antler-site. Thus the quantity of five standard amino acids in Russian deer antlers can be listed in an order:Glycine>Alanine>Proline>Arginine>Valine. This data may be varied in deer antlers from other regions and country. From result of ICP-AES and ICP-MS analysis, iron level, the most important quality symbol in biological trace elements is higher than copper and zinc. Similarly, the amount of iron in antler-tip is the highest and antler-stem’s quality in amount of iron is also better than antler-site. The information of amino acids and trace elements analysis will be applied to a scientific identification. The quality of the deer antler becomes a basis to further evaluate Chinese medicine.
