Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the course of implementing whole language instruction on the senior graders in a kindergarten and examine children’s literacy performance during the process. The obstacles encountered during the practice and solutions were also discussed. Action Research Method was adopted in this study. Observations, interviews, collection of related documents had been carried out for eight months with the qualitative research employed to arrange and analyze the data, respond to the problems in this study, and explain the effects of whole language instruction.
The results of this research indicated that, in the process, whole language instruction of the researcher subsumed selection of teaching materials, design of teaching activities, and environment planning. Children’s literacy performance, oral expression skills, establishment of the interests in reading and writing had been significantly enhanced. Based on the results of this study, some suggestions were also provided as a reference.
