The objective of this study was to research the change of landscape of the Green Island in the 14 years from 1989 to 2003. We used two aerial photographs and apply GIS techniques and quantitative indices of landscape structure to investigate the information of landscape change. In order to provide different analytical viewpoints for the relationships between human and natural environments, the change of human ecology was investigated. The landuse was classified into 17 categories. From the analytical result of the landuse change of two stages, the area of forest was with high percentage and the major pattern of landuse. The area of dry field, mixed and artificial forest has decreased; natural forest, grass and all artificial facilities have increased. Especially, harbor, airport, cemetery and other facilities’ area have grown in multiple. Landscape structure and dynamics analyses were quantified by a series of indices including diversity index, evenness index, fractal dimension index, and landscape shape index. The result of the study shows that diversity and evenness indices are decreasing, but fractal dimension and landscape shape indices are increasing. Thus land use type of Green Island is toward artificiality. Because of tourism industry development, the population of farmer and fisher has decreased, and the number of visitors has been increasing; the consumption of electric power and oil has been increasing; government tax revenue and local people’s income have grown. Based on the result of regression analysis, they were linear correlation with number of visitors. The development of agriculture and fishery has declined, the former was due to investors buying the land, it made the dry field change into building site, grasses and natural forest. The latter resulted from the lack of fishery resource and fishermen getting old. Most of local people have changed their career into tourism industry. The change of landuse can reflect the condition of resource use and environment protection. In order to achieve the goal of sustainable management, we suggest the managers should implement the plans of environment protection and set up a function to monitor natural resources and environment dynamics by the remote sensing and GIS technique.
