Han Yu’s works of poetry and prose, especially the “ku-wen” (classical style prose) he promoted, has long been highly esteemed and left a huge legacy. But just because his literary achievement was too splendid, we tended to neglect his philosophical thoughts.
Across his life, Han Yu wrote and behaved according to the “Tao’ he advocated. Therefore unless we probe into the thoughts underlying his literary works, we’ll never thoroughly understand these works. The pillars of Han Yu’s philosophical thoughts are his theories of Confucian orthodoxy and Anti-Buddhism. Confucian orthodoxy carried through his literary career and was embodied in his Anti-Buddhism. If we could adequately explain these two aspects, then we can get to the bottom of Han Yu’s philosophical thoughts.
My thesis studies Han Yu’s philosophical thoughts and focuses on Confucian orthodoxy and Anti-Buddhism. There are six chapters in my thesis: Chapter I “Introduction”, Chapter II “Han Yu’s Life and Times”, Chapter III “Han Yu’s Theory of Confucian Orthodoxy—The Inheritance and Re-creation of the Thoughts of Confucius and Mencius”, Chapter IV “Han Yu’s Anti-Buddhism Theory”, Chapter V “The Legacy of Han Yu’s Theory of Confucian Orthodoxy and Anti-Buddhism”, Chapter VI “Conclusion”.
Key Words: Han Yu, Confucian Orthodoxy, Anti-Buddhism
