Since 2000, the booming of China’s semiconductor IC fabs makes huge needs of used semiconductor process tools. It used to be traded by foreign vendors. In China, TOPCO Scientific, which is long experienced in agent of Taiwan’s business, has grabbed 4 cases with Taiwan’s top management who moved to China. By the analysis of the industry of used semiconductor process tools in China and the case study of TOPCO’s competitive advantage and strategic choice, we hope to find out how the Taiwan’s used-tool venders manage to build competitive advantage and strategies in order to succeed in fast-evolving China. After investigating and discussing in the research, the conclusions suggests the chiefs of companies should 1. Pursue a cost-leadership strategy in order to meet China’s IC fabs’ need. 2. Build the brand in China’s semiconductor tool market to facilitate selling. 3. Set up a service team and a system of knowledge management for long-term running. 4. Dig deeper into selected target market, diversify products, then develop new tools for new needs if there are robust relationship with clients, available technology, good insight into this market.
