This thesis, divided into six chapters, aims to investigate literary reading of Chang Zhou Lyrics School from the medieval Ching Dynasty to early Ming-Kuo. I examine the chrononical development of “metaphor” in Chang Zhou Lyrics School. Because of succeeding lyricists’ revision, literary criticism on Chang Zhou Lyrics School gradually, instead of the life of the author, focuses on the distinctive attributes of lyrical texts readings.
Multiple reading strategies come up with the process of textual analysis. Therefore, I examine Chang Hui Chun generates his special interpretation by adopting “The Intentional Fallacy” to interpret between inter-textualities. Besides, other lyric critics find transfluency and contingency in textual language can inspire readers’ imagination.
No matter the theoretical development of “metaphor” or the creative interpretation of reading strategies, the general consciousness in Chang Zhou Lyrics School lies in the escalation of lyric styles, that is, “Sublime.” As a result, I study it from the lyrics anthology, lyric discourse, and classical lyricists.
Another interesting discourse is created by how male lyricists criticize female lyrics. Chang Zhou Lyricists write about the relationship between the intelligentsia and prostitutes in lyrics anthologies.
