Of all imaged subject matters equipped with universality are mostly coming from postcards. The circulation of postcards substantiates that they are profoundly and commonly received in Taiwan society, and as to aboriginal images, which are remade from the photos photographed by humanists or Japanese who came to Taiwan. This kind of image can be regarded as a recurrence of dissidents or the other, though photography itself is no entity, as a technique, it makes changes by means of the power relationship given to it; in the asymmetric power network between colonists and colonized people, which as to be a modern technique, taking part in the cultural writing and modeling. Through choosing, recombining, and transferring subject matters by publishers, Taiwan aborigines become a kind of visual material, recurring on the postcards’ images. Therefore, the production of aboriginal images displays not only a kind of visual image combination, but also a kind of organizational system from the colonists who mold stereotype and undertake symbolic controls to the colonized people. The photos photographed by the Japanese from leaders, warriors to ceremonies, the aborigines in the photos are regarded as an exotic example continuously described and replicated by a camera, which provides not only the visual recurrences of the scientific discussion by humanists, but also insinuates a kind of confirmation about the systemization, scientific process, and control functions undertaken by the colonists to the different cultural ethnicity. The writer in this article has an attempt to base himself on the visual interpretation, as Edward W. Said’s Orientallsm a breakthrough point, assisting image research to analyze and understand the aboriginal images displayed in the colonial situation to observe the whole view of Japanese empire colonists to Taiwan aborigines in Japanese period.
