They are quieter and more efficient than roller chains; however, silent chains are more expensive. Nevertheless, research reports on silent chains in literature are limited. Recent research in force analysis usually focused on experimental investigations or was modeled by using CAE software.
This thesis investigates the force distribution and stress analysis of round-pin jointed silent chains. The established static models of round-pin jointed silent chains are based on the kinematical behaviors of at most one link in contact and at most two links in contact. The necessary conditions for the equilibrium of each link plate are set up. When the unknown variables are more than equilibrium equations, engineering optimization is used to eliminate variables. The force distribution of the chain can then be found.
In addition, the stress of round-pin silent chains is analyzed by using FEA software. The details of solid modeling and boundary conditions are set up step by step, due to the different force distribution of each link plate. The results of force distribution and stress analysis of a round-pin jointed silent chain provided in this thesis can be used as guidelines to improve the strength and durability of silent chain drives.
