The emissions characteristics and heat release rates of burning motor scooters, fire-retardant sofas, and non-fire-retardant sofas were identified.   From the experimental measurements of motor scooters, it was found that one motor scooter had a peak heat release rate of 1MW, and two scooters and three scooters had 2MW and 4MW peak heat release rate, respectively. The ignition and fire spreading patterns affected the maximal heat release rate considerably. As the number of scooters increased, the duration of the fully-developed burning period became shorter.   In the experiments of fire-retardant sofas and non-fire-retardant sofas, it was found that the ignitability of non-fire-retardant sofas was better than fire-retardant sofas. Because the interior of the front side of fire-retardant sofa had a layer of fire-proof cotton, the initial spread of the fire on a fire-retardant sofa was slower than a non-fire-retardant sofa.
