Chinese characters have to be modified in order to match up in the limits display situation, such as the small screen of PDA and traffic signal. It is the key point for safety that a sign with high visibility of characters in order to reduce the mental loading when applying for monitor in public and traffic. However Chinese characters are can be disassembled into various parts (Modules), which kind of characters should be change? And what kind of change can make Chinese characters have lower complicacy? Therefore, this study aims to find out the relationships between quantifiable descriptors, the modules, and the complicacy.   The study reviewed the previous studies, and 218 Chinese characters were categorized into 9 types of Chinese Character Module (CCM) by using Law of grouping. 218 characters were analyzed and measured by means of the stroke numbers, image density, amounts of image segments and stroke nodes. 51 testees (28 natives and 23 foreigners) were tested to evaluate the complicacy of the 218 characters. The results were concluded as follows: 1) There were similar appearance of the complicacy between natives and foreigners (t = -0.080, P = 0.936 >0.05). However the result of the foreigners had difference between beginners and testees who had not learned Chinese (t = -8.426, P = 0.000 < 0.01). 2) The complicacy of Chinese character had the highest value of correlation (r=0.94) with the amounts of image segment. It was also positively related to the stroke numbers (r=0.93), amounts of node (r=0.92), image density (r=0.90). 3) Those quantifiable descriptors were analyzed in regression. The formulas could be used to predict the complicacy of Chinese characters. 4) The complicacy was going higher with increasing stroke numbers but it was different from the performance on legibility which showed a curve going down later stage.   Through the final task, the study gained nine methods to lower the characters complicacy. We put the conclusion in order to sum up and offer the reference while designing Chinese characters in the limits display situation and reducing the complicacy.
