Owing to the advancing of various new technologies driven by fast changing market requirements, the R&D environment in Taiwan has changed significantly. Many non-profit R&D corporations are now trying to figure out some strategic collaborative model in response to the changing environment. These collaborative interactions will influence the management mechanisms of these corporations. Most previous studies about strategic management of R&D corporations focus on strategy issues. Very few of them investigate the management mechanism of R&D corporations. This dissertation therefore studies, through qualitative investigations of each individual case, the management mechanism of Taiwan non-profit R&D corporations. The first step is to modify the Schumann’s(1995)Measuring R&D performance systems to put into consideration the non-profit characteristic of the investigated samples. The second step is to design a questionnaire based on the proposed model. The third step is to collect the relevant data, including the management structure, R&D activities and the associated output, by interviewing the technical director of each sampled corporation. The result shows that the most important two factors for the performance of non-profit R&D corporations are the flexibility of the management structure and talent management & development.
