Some functions of the irrigation canal system include: the reallocation of water from different sources to fertilize agricultural farmlands, the provision of water to promote growth of agricultural crops and to promote sustainability of the ecological environment. From a geographical point of view, the irrigation canals are designed to be a branching network for the purpose of irrigating agricultural farmlands at different altitudes. To efficiently understand the significant capability of managing sources of information regarding the canal system – especially the information regarding the branching character of the canals – it is constructive to establish an irrigation canal information system for the purpose of management, based on the geographic information system. Irrigation canal is the controlling network of farm irrigational transportation and therefore, the management, maintenance, and upgrading of the canal network system would be one of most important services provided by the Farm IrrigationStarting from the area surrounding the Siaogang station of the Farm Irrigation Association of Kaoshiung, this research plans to set up horizontal and vertical conducting centres, as reference points for a thorough search of information, the upgrading of canal, and the controlling of maintenance and management at different locations. Secondly, this research uses MapInfo to number irrigation canals and excretory canals to establish the interrelationship between them. Also, this research plans to construct informational and canal infrastructures for establishing a digital canal information system composed of space and intrinsic information. This allows the managing personnel to search for canal information from this system as well as to increase the efficiency of the service management of The Farm Irrigation Association. Association.
