In Taiwan, currently, scuba diving activity is one of the fast growing activities of outdoor recreation. Great diving spots are abundant in Taiwan. Especially, these diving spots are located in the coastlines and people are very easy to access them. Based on beautiful natural ocean resources, Taiwan will have the chance to become a new famous diving spot in the world if scuba diving planning and settings can be set up well.
This research is intended to find out the causal relationships among recreation motivation, enduring involvement and specialization of scuba diving in Taiwan. In the study, the recreation motivation includes five factors: personal challenge, escape, learn, adventure, and social interaction. The enduring involvement was composed of three dimensions: attraction, self-expression, and centrality. The specialization included three factors: past experience, commitment, and lifestyle. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to develop a robust structural equation model (SEM) to study the causal relationships among recreation motivation, enduring involvement and specilaization in scuba diving and findings of the study will provide valuable information to related department of government and scuba diving operators as important advises.
In the study, 1,100 structural questionnaires were distributed to Longdong, Yeliou, Green Island, and Kenting, and 810 were usable. The response rate of survey was 73.64%. Results of the study were as follows: Personal challenge was significantly, positively related to self-expression. Escape was significantly, positively related to enduring involvement. Learn was significantly, positively related to attraction. Adventure was significantly, negatively related to centrality. Social interaction was significantly, positively related to attraction and self-expression respectively. Attraction was significantly, positively related to lifestyle. Centrality was significantly, positively related to specialization. Personal challenge was significantly, negatively related to past experience. Personal challenge was significantly, positively related to lifestyle. Adventure was significantly, negatively related to past experience and lifestyle respectively. Social interaction was significantly, positively related to specialization. Attraction was significantly, positively related to self-expression. Self-expression was significantly, positively related to centrality. Finally, Attraction was significantly, positively related to centrality.
