The success of the synthesis of the SPIO-PEG(400)-FA, SPIO-PEG(1000)-FA and SPIO- PEG(2000)-FA were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-Visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). On the other hand, TEM analysis showed the well-dispersed nanoparticles after SPIO were coated with PEG and folic acid. The surface-modified with nanoparticles, which were detected by spin-lattice relaxation time(T1) and spin-spin relaxation time(T2) with 20 MHz relaxometer, demonstrated that the nanoparticles had highly relaxivity. Moreover, the nanoparticles, SPIO-PEG(400)-FA, SPIO-PEG(1000)-FA and SPIO-PEG(2000)-FA, were targeted to the human nasopharyngeal epidermoid carcinoma(KB)cells which could be proved by flow cytometric analyzer experiment. Therefore, they could be used to detect the over-expression folate-receptor cells, and have the potential to be used as the contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).
