ABSTRACT
Tennis is a recreational sport for everyone. There is no age limit or body contact and therefore, tennis increases its popularity much faster than most of the recreational sports. As the sports technology improves, tennis training methods and equipments also improve as well. However, due to the high technique applied to training methods and equipments, tennis injuries also increase in recent years. Unfortunately, there were few studies related to tennis injuries in Taiwan. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the sports injury among elite tennis athletes in Taiwan.
One hundred and Sixteen valid questionnaires were collected from different age levels of elite tennis players in order to study the relationship between injuries potential factors and the decision of medical seeking treatment. Descriptive statistics was used to present: Players’ family background, categories of injury and injury treatment. Chi-square (X2) was used to test the association among these variables.
The results showed that the ankle sprain was the most commonly injured region (50.9%), followed by back injuries (19.0%). Injuries happened mostly in hard court compared to other types of court (76.7%). Most of the injuries occur among tennis players during practices and training hours (62.9%). Forehand movement occur the most injuries (32.8%). The treatment that most tennis players used when an injury occurred was ice packing (82.8%). As for the medical seeking treatment, most players would seek for western medical treatment (35.3%). The factor that influenced mostly to a player’s decision of seeking medical treatment was from those doctors or nurses injured players met before (32.8%). During the recovery period, most players still felt the pain of the injury (63.8%). As for continuing treatment, most players did not seek any further treatment (70.7%). Most players had the same injury occurred more than once or twice (62.1%). As we could see from the data in the study, most players did not take time off when injured and did not take an injury seriously. There was a significance relationship between injury type and the type of movement for an injury (P<.05).
This study suggested that most athletes had the same body part re-injured and also most of them did not seek any further treatment. From the results in this study, I would like to give some advices to the players in Taiwan: It is important to have a completely treatment for their injuries and also to take an injury seriously otherwise it could destroy their tennis career.
