It is most prevalent in adolescents. It most commonly affects the face. It takes the form of comedones (blackheads), papules, pustules, nodes, or cyst. It tends to be persistent or recurrent. The present study provides statistical evidence of practitioners’ understanding of adolescent acne. It aims to provide Chinese medical educators with a greater understanding of the diagnosis of adolescent acne. The present study is survey of Chinese medical doctors’ experience in the treatment of adolescent acne. It was conducted in the north of Taiwan, mainly in Taoyuan and Taipei counties. The survey aims to understand the main characteristics of adolescent acne: the affected area (forehead, cheeks, chin); the bowels and viscera affected (stomach, liver, lung); the channels affected (stomach, large intestine, and liver channels). Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) shows that the stomach, lung, large intestine, and liver are most commonly involved in adolescent acne. In diagnosis, the inspection examination is the most important; inquiry and palpation are of secondary importance. Fuzzy logical analysis shows that the respondents as whole report pathologies of the five viscera and cold-heat and vacuity-repletion complexes, but that physicians with 11 years or more of experience report lung heat and lung repletion as the main conditions, and liver heat and liver repletion as secondary ones.
