The purpose of this research is to explore the P.O.E. study on the reformation of two train station plazas in Taiwan from pedestrian’s viewpoints, in order to give guidance to future designs or modifications of train station plazas. The reason to choose Hsinchu and Taichung train station plazas for P.O.E. study is because they are the first two train station plaza re-design projects(completed in 2001 and 2002)in the Public Space Renaissance Plan in Taiwan since 1997 .Although their importance is unquestionable, however, the original designs and the performance of their post-occupancy are significantly different.
The research method uses the Post Occupancy Evaluation and the Place Diagram developed by P.P.S(Projects for Public Spaces)as the framework to evaluate and compare the above two plazas. The implementation of questionnaire and DV investigation give evidence for the design applications.
The P.P.S. Place Diagram is the framework for operating research evaluation, the four dimensions separately are(1) Access and linkage, (2)Comfort and image, (3)Use and activity and(4) Sociability. Trough the examing of the situation of using station plaza in Taichung and Hsinchu by the four dimensions(key attributes), we realize the overall assessment in Hsinchu is higher than Taichung. The use and activity in Hsinchu are more active and various, on the contrary, the function in Taichung station plaza is just passing mainly, the short of rest space could not offer people various social life. In the application design, research result give guidance for the design revision; besides, it is also a basis for the redevelopment or redesign for other train station plazas.
