In 2000, OMG, the maintenance group of CORBA, published the FT-CORBA specification which defines the minimum specifications for the fault-tolerant CORBA. The implementation details of this standard are left out by the specification and the implementers are free to extend the basic facilities specified in the standard. The basic guideline is to strike a balance between the implementation costs and efficiencies while supporting the fault-tolerant requirements. In this paper, we propose a coterie-based host level failure detection algorithm under the FT-CORBA specification. The proposed algorithm can detect the crash failure of hosts and failure detectors’ faults efficiently and achieve the ‘no single point of failure’ promise of the FT-CORBA specification.
