Among a variety of social movement theories, the political process perspective of Douglas McAdam was employed as the theoretical framework to understand the evolution of the Hakka movements. In the past two decades, the rapid occurrence of political, social, and economic transformation in Taiwan presented an opportunity to highlight the long-lasting inequality imposed by other dominant ethnic groups and to issue social protests for the revitalization of Hakka’s identity. Apart from the Hakka movements, this study launched an investigation to the social protests made by the indigenous people of Taiwan. The social movements of the indigenous people, even with meager resources, appeared to be more consistent, goal-oriented and persistent than did those of the Hakka people. Both the movements of these two ethnic groups have led to a great accomplishment—the establishment of special commissions for either ethnic group under the Administrative Yuan to promote respective languages and cultures. This study argues in conclusion that to achieve the harmony among ethnic groups, not only a well-balanced public policy for minority ethnic groups is essential, but a great endeavor to promote the mutual respect of different cultures between ethnic groups is also indispensable. 謝劍 2005 學位論文 ; thesis 136 zh-TW |

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of changing socio-political structure on the Hakka movements in Taiwan.
