Description
Summary:碩士 === 佛光人文社會學院 === 生命學研究所 === 93 === Abstract The cosmic view and the most basic operation law of Chinese culture are to pursue the harmony among three aspects. They are natural system, the individual system and human relationship. The concept in pursuit of the structure of thinking on yin-yang communal generation has had potential influence on marriage and family ethics. Since ancient times, people find spouses to get united their clans through the medium, matchmakers. The legends of matchmakers have showed out people’s expectations to look for happy matches. Since the birth of the Republic of China, on the one hand, having been affected by western free choice in love and marriage, the opposition on traditional marriage system was aroused. On the other hand, matchmakers just looking for instant profits had brought the public a negative impression. As a result, people pay less and less attention to the roles of matchmakers. The purpose of this study is by the field investigation approach to take a research in “Chow-Ten Temple” on two aspects: the first one is the folk belief, and the second one is how the ceremonies of matchmakers guide the lives of the public, and be helpful to the unmarried persons. By the narrative of this ethnographic thesis, the author intended to sketch the outline of the contemporary religious life style. Through the life story of the caretaker in this temple, the process of how this temple developed was showed. The rise and development of “Chow-ten Temple” is one of the important types of temples in Taiwan. Keyword: matchmaker, ceremonies, Chow-ten Temple, Multiple-structure of Life
