Their job was basically on irregular schedule sudras rotation system. The nature of the job grealy influenced their leisure life planning and participation. Leisure may have various benefits, including relaxation, joyfulness, and self-development. It was believed, police officiers may reduce their leisure constraints and work stress through the participation of leisure activities. The purpose of the study was to investigate police officiers’ leisure participation and to analyze factors that may influence their leisure constraints. The study population was 900 police offiers of Keelung city. Leisure participation inventory and leisure constraint scales were used as survey instruments. Data were collected around March and April of 2005 by utilizing convenience sampling. 443 Valid questionnaires of 443 were obtained. The data were analyzed by using t-tests, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient methods. The results of statistical findings revealed that the respondents’ leisure participation and leisure constraints were significantly different because of gender, marital status, religion, as well as stressess. Four conclusions were drawn: (1) Male respondents participated more on social activities, and perceived higher leisure constraints than females. (2) The unmarried participated more on art and literature activities than the married. Those with no children or with children of 18 year-olds participated more leisure activities and perceived higher leisure constraints than those with children of 17 year-olds and younger. (3) Those with Christianity or Catholic beliefs tended to participate less leisure activities and perceive higher leisure constraints than those with Buddhism, Taoism or no-religion beliefs. (4) Those with strong stresses and insufficient family support tended to participate less leisure activities and perceive higher leisure constraints than those with low stresses and abundant family support. However, they tended to show a lower interpersonal leisure constraint. Based on the conclusions, few recommendations and suggestions were offered for future research and practice.
