碩士 === 朝陽科技大學 === 營建工程系碩士班 === 93 === Recently, the government implemented a very important policy in order to restore local cultural heritage and to preserve some historic buildings for future generations to come. The damage on some historic buildings caused by the 921earthquake in 1999 was serious. Engineers have to thoroughly examine these buildings in terms of damage location and pattern before appropriate methods can be adopted for the necessary repair and reinforcement works. The results of this study revealed that: (1) overall visible examination, subsurface explorations and some non-destructive tests at selected locations are essential to carrying out the first phase the restoration. (2) It is important to identify places/buildings that have not yet been categorized as historic interests but may have cultural value and/or are worthy to be commemorated. Preventive measures need to be taken in order to reduce the risk of damage in the event of natural disasters. (3) The Taiwan Provincial Consultative Council earthquake damage evaluation/repair case study presented in this study provides a useful reference for historic buildings under similar situations in central Taiwan.
