Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate the categories of herbs sold in herb shops of Kaohsiung area, the reasons and conditions that people make use of, and sampling both the pesticide residues and content of heavy metal in fresh herbs . Based on the investigation, we can understand the sanitation and safety of the herbs.
First, we made an exploratory investigation in detail into the distribution of herb shops around Kaohsiung area. There are 41 fresh herbal stores in Kaohsiung County, inclusive of 25 shops, 14 stands and 2 in-house selling. There are 23 in Kaohsiung City , including 20 shops and 3 stands. Among these selling places, the district near Temple of Three Phoenixes is the largest commercial center, and the following is Hsien-te Market Lane in Chien-chen District、 the second Public Market in Fongshan City and Chia-hsien commercial center for stands. (on Sat. and Sun.) Through the investigation, herbs that these places sold are classified into 4 phyla, 99 families and about 337 species. The dealers are accustomed to calling it “herb” and often results in the confusion and abuse of different herbs. In addition, through having another investigation into the whole condition that people make use of herbs, we could know the motives of using herbs to cure diseases, the information source and the 10 diseases most often treated with herbs.
Towards the examination of both the fresh herbs’ pesticide residues and content of heavy metal, 30 cases were sampled. Two of the cases were found to contain the pesticide which was Aldicarb Sulfoxide not allowed. Another 2 cases were found to contain excess amount of pesticide - 3-OH Carbofuran and Phenthoate. Focusing on the examination of Copper, Zinc, Lead, Arsenic and Cadmium, the content of Lead in 14 cases was above 0.3 ppm ; the content of Cadmium was 0.011 ppm in one case ; Copper in 3 cases was above 5.0 ppm and Zinc in 2 cases was less than 5.0 ppm. The authorities concerned ought to make a sanitation standard because there isn’t any relevant rule to restrict the content level of heavy metal in herbs.
Using herbs to cure their diseases has been an undeniable fact in existence for a long time. Currently it was regulated by food administration in Taiwan. In order to ensure its efficiency and accuracy while curing patients, the authorities concerned should take into consideration how to guide herb-sellers and put herbs into control.
