The bondability between polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU) adhesive is low. An atmospheric pressure ejected plasma system is developed to pre-treat the PVC surface and increase its bondability to PU adhesive. The influences of gas type and operations parameters of plasma treatment on adhesion properties were analyzed. The surface modifications were characterized by means of different surface analysis techniques, such as contact angle measurement, ATR-IR spectroscopy, XPS, SEM, T-peel test and surface roughness measurement. Our results show that decrease in the contact angle is observed for surface with oxygen plasma treated. The formation of oxygen-containing moieties on PVC surface improves the wettability of PVC surface and bond strength. The improvements of bondability are determined by plasma power, gas flow rate, gas type, time of treatment, and the distance between nozzle and substrate.
