Summary: | 碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 視覺傳達設計系碩士班 === 92 === Based on ''time'' as the point of view, the study probes into how the illustrations on each page in children picture books had been masterly and artfully arranged no matter whether there are text as a guide to the story or not. The narrative, however, still can be understood fully at a glance and build both comprehensive and coherent atmospheres. Classifications and analyses of totally sixty nine children picture books which received both domestic and international prize awards were done through a thorough investigation of related documents and references. The sense of time continuity is properly expressed and controlled in application of between pictures or between pages. The objectives of the research are as follow:
(1) To comprehend variety of time applications in children picture books.
(2) To probe into essential symbolic elements of time expression in children picture books.
(3) To classify and analyze the applications of time in each circumstance and characteristic, so that it can be used as reference to express applications of time performing forms in picture books.
The results of the study are as follow:
(1) Through summaries of all the samples, the application of time performing forms in children picture books can be divided into seven types, they are as follow:
1. Frame by frame method
Frames are used to differ the time and duration to show the process of applications of time. It can be divided into four types of time performing forms, they are as follow:
(1) Instantaneous progressive actions.
(2) Progressive actions in different moment.
(3) Emphasis of time in progressive actions.
(4) The change of time interval.
2. Scene variation method:
The whole picture is considered as one frame, let one of the scenes become the reference, then parts of the scene are reduced or added gradually, using leaf-over linkages and changes between one page to another to show the duration and the progress of the actions. The meaning of the time expressions can be divided into two types, they are: different moment of progressive actions and time circulation.
3. Picture flow chart method
Break up the actions into more detail parts of movements and then drawing the actions into one whole screen so that series of actions from the beginning until the end can be seen clearly in order to give an effect of complete action. This kind of display method has the same function as the flow chart system.
4. Blur and dissolve of details method
Making the picture blur and dissolve some of the details in order to show a quick motion or time-elapse. Different phases of actions also can be interpreted on the picture. It can be divided into three types, they are: momentary, elapsing, and slow tempos.
5. Color discrimination
Using colors in order to attract the viewers to determine and construct the time of the scene.
6. Montages method
Using images from different times to compose or construct the picture, so that the viewers will be impressed or skimming over the process of many changes that happened.
7. Free curves method
Based on the free curves to give some clues or hints about time; hours, minute, and second. This method can be divided into: flow path actions, progressive actions, and leap motions.
(2) In the analysis of the meanings contained in the time attributes and symbols, there are four main aspects that built the correlation of the meanings and forms. They are: time attributes or instruments, nocturnal animals, celestial movements of the nature, seasonal plants and trees. Different interpretations in different ways definitely will give different meanings and definitions.
