The previous design data is valuable to new product design for reference and can reduce the whole design time. However, traditional paper process can’t provide immediate search and monitor the progress of new product design. Paper record with searching limitation also decreases the advantage of reusing data. PDM (Product data management) system is with the properties of recording and searching data, process automaton and following task progress, so it has been one of effective tool to support design management. The research creates a conceptual structure through papers study and applies the method of questionnaire and case study to study the effect of design process and progress after PDM system introduction. The conclusion is as follows: PDM system is with well function to manage document and record. There is no location and time limitation to get product data necessary by PDM system. When PDM system is combined with the gating and project owner system in design process, the quality and progress of design project can be well controlled. Also, the design efficiency can be increased by process improvement.
