The average yield of hot water extract from 31 tested herbal medicines ranged from 3.7 % to 41.1 %. Bischofia javanica showed the highest amount of total phenolics ca. 632.3 mg/g. 27 out of 31 tested herbal medicines showed more than 50 % of inhibition of lipid peroxidation and DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Five tested herbal medicines, including Lantana camara, Verbena officinalis, Mallotus paniculatus, Pteris multifida, and Chamaesyce thymifolia showed more than 60 % of ferrous ion chelating activities. The reducing power of 31 herbal medicines showed a linear relation to their contents of total phenolics. B. javanica had the higest reducing power among 31 tested herbal medicines. B. javanica, Lophatherum gracile, and M. paniculatus exhibited stronger superoxide anion scavenging activities. With IC50 similar to that of arbutin (2.72 mM), B. javanica exhibited significant inhibition of tyrosinase activity, Polygonum chinense exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Propionibacter- ium acnes, similar to that of benzoyl peroxide. Mirabilis jalapa, C. thymifolia, and M. paniculatus could be alternative sources for natural whitening and antioxidant agents.
