Twenty-seven elite wrestlers and ten elite track athletes participated in this study. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and insulin response during OGTT was determined under an overnight fasted condition. Body composition was also measured before the tests. We have found that wrestlers exhibited greater percent fat, greater BMI (body mass index), and greater WHR (waist to hip ratio). It is known that skeletal muscle is the major insulin-sensitive tissue for glucose uptake. Although muscle mass in wrestlers was greater than in track athletes, no significant difference in glucose tolerance was found between wrestlers and track athletes. The insulin response during OGTT was significantly better in track athletes than in wrestlers, as indicated by lower insulin level. In conclusion, insulin sensitivity of the athletes appears to be related to sports specialty and body composition of the athletes. Kuo, Chia-Hua 郭家驊 2004 學位論文 ; thesis 34 zh-TW |
