Summary: | 碩士 === 臺南藝術學院 === 博物館學研究所 === 92 === To attract visitors, the museums in Taiwan, a highly populated island, are usually located in big cities. However, owing to the extremely high land cost in city, few museums could truly own a wide-open space. Nevertheless, with the advantages of possessing tremendous amount of budget and easy acquisition of land, those National Museums thus could possess a lot of wide-open space. After acquisition, museums’ managements usually put considerable efforts to plan, design and manage so that they could utilize and maintain its open space well. In the case study conducted in National Museum of Natural Science, NMNS, the visitors’ characteristics and behaviors in museum’s open space will be known and understood by a survey on visitors. Besides, the museum’s open space and its visitor will be evaluated and the role, the function, and the orientation of the open space will be according found out. The diversity and efficiency of application will be submitted in this study.
In various stages of the study, the observation, the questionnaire, and the interview were acted like connecting links to collect and inquire the information. After the investigation was debated and analyzed, the result of this study was brought out as the following:
1. The type of the public in the open space of NMNS
The types of the public who pay visits to the open space of NMNS are as following three: firstly, visitors come to visit museum itself, secondly, tourists come specially for museum’s open space, and, thirdly, the community inhabitant. It’s interesting to find that the number of the first group came as the biggest one and the second have the highest frequency of visiting. The group that spent considerable time in museum’s open space came to the third one.
2. The behavior of the public in the open space of NMNS
The major behavior of the public in museum’s open space is for recreation activities. All the visitors might visit and learn in museum’s open space just as they are inside of the museum. However, they were passive and merely had a superficial learning. The exhibition that aimed at presenting a simple topic or the topic about their living was easier to win people’s acceptance. Identically, the educational activities of science and culture festivals are also very popular among the public.
3. The cognition of the public experience in museum’s open space
“The museum and its open space could not be separated” was viewpoint of the majority in this survey. Besides, the tone(physical and atmosphere) of museum’s open space should be consistent with the museum attribution.
4. The public’s expectation and suggestion for museum’s using the open space
The public are prevalent satisfied with the open space of NMNS in this survey. However, if there are more culture activities provided by museum in its open space, the more the public will be attracted to visit.
The museum belongs to the public. It is indispensable in culture development and it embodies the culture of a country. The range of museum service in Taiwan should be enlarged not only in the building itself but also in its open space. To attract those visitors who are still not willing to go to the museum, a culture guide in its community was considered by the museum which should provide more opportunity to participate culture activities. Finally, the living environment was shaped well into culture by the effort of museum.
